Fishing is the activity of catching fish. Fish are normally caught in the wild. Techniques for catching fish include hand gathering, spearing, netting, angling and trapping.

The term fishing may be applied to catching other aquatic animals such as molluscs, cephalopods, crustaceans, and echinoderms. The term is not normally applied to catching aquatic mammals, such as whales, where the term whaling is more appropriate, or to farmed fish.

According to FAO statistics, the total number of commercial fishermen and fish farmers is estimated to be 38 million. Fisheries and aquaculture provide direct and indirect employment to over 500 million people. In 2005, the worldwide per capita consumption of fish captured from wild fisheries was 14.4 kilograms, with an additional 7.4 kilograms harvested from fish farms. In addition to providing food, modern fishing is also a recreational pastime.

What is the best pike fishing technique?
Q. I'm going Pike fishing in the dead stream between Houghton lake, MI and 127. It has murkey waters, with channels about 6-8 ft deep x 20 ft across, running through a flood plain thats almost always has about 2 ft of water in it. What is the best lure or live bait to use? What part of the channel should I fish in? Any tips or tricks? Ive only reeled one pike out of here before, and I took it with a pike minnow. I mostly just wind up with bass or dog fish on my line. I forgot to ask this, should I use a steel leader, Ive had a few pike chomp right through 15lb line.

A. To Sharon: thanks but your answer was just as good. When you visit the link sharon gave you, read her answer. She says "you will find them in shallow, weedy bays (5-10 feet)" Thats where they are at right now. The hot weather lately has pushed them here. These channels you are talking about should have active pike. Since the there is murky water, go with lures with a lot of flash. When you go to pick a lure make sure you get one with a lot of flash and go by the phrase 'bigger is better'. Pike can and will run with big lure, dont be afraid to through them because they are and you dont think youll catch anything with it Try a large jointed floating rapala, one that is 6-9 inches and is a deep runner.. For some reason, pike are generally… [cont.]

When does ice fishing start in Minnesota?
Q. I am writing a book, and part of the story involves an ice fishing trip in Minnesota, but I need to know if early to mid December is too early to ice fish. Living in Florida, I'm not that familiar with the fishing seasons up there. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

A. I have seen fishable ice as early as end of Oct, or as late as mid Dec. Usually it is about the end of Nov when we start getting enough ice to walk on with nothing more than a bucket to sit on. It takes at least 4 inches to walk on. This last season I was out there with my shack in early Dec.
