Q. Can you give a good resource for learning Ancient Greek language? What is the difference between Attic and Koine Greek?
Asked by Puck - Mon Feb 26 12:58:27 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A good resource for learning Ancient Greek? The classics department at your local university. However, If you don't want to take the classes, I learned from Hansen and Quinn - I forget the title of the book, since we always just called it "Hansen and Quinn" (I'm sure if you google the authors' names you'll find a reference to the book). It's a very thorough book for starters. After that, I'd buy some Loeb editions of the original greek authors and try my hand at translating (Loeb editions are nice for beginners because they have Greek on one side, English on the other). As for the second question, Attic Greek is a dialect of Ancient Greek that was spoken in Attica (the area around Athens). There were a lot of dialects in Classical… [cont.]

What is the ancient greek word for power?
Q. My brother wanted me to see if power in ancient greek is better and easier to say then energy. Also if you can, tell me the ancient greek word for "chi" if it has a word.
Asked by Solaris Knight - Fri May 8 11:49:10 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are two words in greek that could be translated power (as far as I know): 1: Dunamas (denoting action; where we get our words, dynamite and dynamic) 2: Exusia (denoting authority; where we get our words, execute and executive) chi is not an Enlglish word at all. It is chinese, if I am not mistaken, although it has made it's way into various vocabularies. This is more like energy within. I don't think it is the same as energy being used for power.

A. After Alexander the Great took over Egypt the two religions started to mangle with each other. Temples of Egyptian gods were build in Greece and of Greek gods in Egypt. During that era (called the Hellenistic period) new gods were created. For example Serapis a healer god, had his great temple the Sarapion build in Alexandria. There Greeks, whose religion was more anthropocentric, influenced the Egyptians into seeing their gods as more loving and less demanding. During that period we also have a mixture in art. For example we see statues of gods with Egyptian-like bodies and clothes but Greek-style faces. For example figures of Isis-Aphrodite or Amon Rah Alexander the Great.

A. If you put terms like "greek pottery" or "how to draw greek vases" in search engines on the internet, you'll find plenty of related results. *** First of all, keep in mind that there are two basic types of vase decoration: geometric patterns and (human) figures. Geometric patterns belong to the so-called "Geometric Period" (~1000 BC - 800 BC), while figures ("red" with black background or black with "red background") belong to the "Archaic" and the "Classical" times (~650-450 BC). Have a look at the following Wikipedia article: (there are additional links on the same page). *** Second, choose a vase type and a pattern/ scene to depict on the vase. A. You shoould read "The allegory of the cave" by Plato. Inside the cave Socrates begins his presentation by describing a scenario in which what people take to be real would in fact be an illusion. He asks Glaucon to imagine a cave inhabited by prisoners who have been chained and held immobile since childhood: not only are their arms and legs held in place, but their heads are also fixed, compelled to gaze at a wall in front of them. Behind the prisoners is an enormous fire, and between the fire and the prisoners is a raised walkway, along which puppets of various animals, plants, and other things are moved. The puppets cast shadows on the wall, and the prisoners watch these shadows. There are also echoes off the wall from the noise produced… [cont.]

A. You should learn Ancient Greek. I am a native speaker of greek language and I have to admit that now after 6 years of learning ancient greek at school (and the two last years in a more advanced level because of examinations) I cannot understand without dictionary a lot of words. Ancient Greek have different vocabulary, different grammar and sometimes different syntax from Modern Greek. And especially Plato and Aristophanes are very difficult to be understood in their prototype (trust me, I have passed hours trying to translate Plato and Sophocles so I know the difficulty). Also, ancient greek is a difficult language because it has a different philosophy. However, after several lessons when you will start to understand the structure of this… [cont.]

A. No one has answered yet so I'll take a stab at it. Greek art and architecture was based on the golden ratio, also called the "divine proportion". So I was thinking of the word divine, and the HGTV show Divine Design. So how about: Greek Architecture: The *Original* Divine Design? Or...it is also called classical art--maybe find a way to work the word "classic" into the title.

A. Women with any wealth did not work. They stayed indoors running their households. The only public job of importance for a woman was as a religious priestess. In Sparta, men stayed in barracks until they were thirty. Since Spartan women did not have this restriction, they had more freedoms and responsibilities in public life. They were able to go out in public unescorted, participate in athletic contests, and inherit land. In the fourth century, over two-fifths of the land in Sparta was owned by women. In Athens, the law required all inheritances to go through the male line and limited property that could be owned by women. It was the wives who supervised the slaves and managed the household responsibilities, such as weaving and cooking.… [cont.]

A. The Roman undergarment that men wore was just two pieces of material (usually white) gathered at the shoulders and sewn up the sides. If you have white bath towels and safety pins, you can do it. What the uneducated call a toga was a very specific piece of material. It was about 12 feet long and white with a purple border. The wear of it was restricted to male roman citizens. No one else could wear it. Now anyone could wear a palla which was also about 12 feet long and could be any color except white with a purple border. If your mom has some material she's never used, fold it in quarters lengthwise so it fans out. (Fold it in half, then take the outer edges and fold them in toward the fold.)
