Should our main source of salmon for food be wild or farmed?
Q. Each year we spend millions of dollars for fish enhancement in the Pacific Northwest and fish hatcheries, and then we allow commercial fishermen to harvest over half of the fish. Wouldn't it be better to leave the wild salmon alone and farm fish for food? Salmon are not a renewable resource because the wild (non-hatchery fish) are being killed during these harvest and then we have fewer and fewer wild stocks, which some are endangered.
Asked by BC - Fri Apr 23 23:24:31 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Wild caught definitely tastes better... Farm raised makes them easier to control and manage, though, and you don't have to worry about depleting all of the salmon.

How to harvest the pineapple from my pineapple plant.?
Q. I have a small pineapple plant and it has bear a fruit and I wanted to harvest the fruit and plant it again. Normally the commercial pineapple has no or very short stem but my small pineapple plant look like the drawing found in this link: and I wanted to ask you guys if I am going to harvest the fruit will I cut the connection of the from the fruit or do I cut off the entire stem? After I harvest the fruit, will the plant be able to bear another fruit ever again? Thanks
Asked by Ken - Thu May 20 13:48:08 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. When your pineapple is ready to harvest (it should be a golden yellow if grown from a commercial variety) there are a couple of ways to do so. You can either cut it from the plant (I use pruning shears if doing this) or you can snap it off. To snap it off grasp the pineapple and give it a sudden snap to the side; it'll snap off just below the fruit. As for additional pineapples from the plant: there could be 'suckers' or 'pups' growing from the plant. If so, and you leave them attached, they will produce another pineapple on each. These will be much smaller, coming from an attached pup. If you remove the pups and plant them they will produce a pineapple each, and probably more pups. Good luck and enjoy!

A. The UCC is referenced below. It covers leases, purchases of movable goods and services. It does not cover real property transfers. Real property does not move. A cruise ship is chattel (movable property). A tree attached to the land is real property, until chopped down. #1: Remove product from quarry: a real estate transaction: not covered. See the second link below. #2: Sale of a product, wheat: covered by UCC #3: Lease of gas rights: lease for removal of product, not a real estate contract: covered by UCC. #4: sale of land: not covered by UCC

Q. Why does greenepeace oppose the harvesting of natural resources-Sport fishing is wrong and should be banned.
Asked by SWTSGR - Wed Feb 14 23:10:29 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Greenpeace and other environmental or animal protection groups oppose whale hunting because they think whales are very, very intelligent animals and have the right to live. This opinion that whales are intelligent is not always based on factual studies that can be replicated by another group of scientists that support whale hunting. It is often based on nothing more than a hunch or gut feeling or by observing certain behaviors common in humans and leaping to the conclusion they are extremely intelligent, which could very well be but some proof is always better.

Is it ok to feed dogs only eggs and rice and veggies? I want to get away from feeding commercial dog foods..?
Q. I have 7 dogs ranging from 35 to 55 pounds. I am through with commercial dog food due to contamination and questionable ingredients. I want to know if I feed them say, each 5 eggs, some rice, and a bend of veggies such as broccoli, carrots, parsley, and such if it will be nutritious enough for them to eat on a regular basis? The reason I choose eggs as the protein source is because I live in an area where I can set up a giant chicken coop area to harvest eggs daily. How does this sound, and any suggestions are welcome. I realize the eggs should be soft boiled according to BARF guidelines.. I also intend to supplement each meal with a helping of Missing Link Plus. Also will be able to add yogurt now and then.. I currently feed them Ol' Roy… [cont.]

A. Eggs, rice and veggies is not a complete diet. There is no calcium in this. Also no taurine, no organ meat.. etc. etc. You're better off going straight to raw... it's not expensive when you get the hang of it, I promise. I have 3 giant breed dogs and it costs me next to nothing to feed them raw... and it's better for them too. If you have any questions, please message me. I'm a Canine Nutrition Consultant and I'd really like to help you.

Biefly define the term "recruitment limitation" as it applies to marine populations?
Q. Biefly define the term "recruitment limitation" as it applies to marine populations, and describe ONE implication of recruitment limitation for harvested populations. (ie. commercial fishing).
Asked by cand26 - Wed Jun 23 20:43:41 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. In biological populations recruitment generally refers to surviving new young each year (sometime also immigration to a population as well). Recruitment limitation is the limit to how much recruitment is possible in a given year. This has sever limitations of sustainable harvest. If you harvest more in a given year than are recruited you have negative population growth. If you set up a system with harvest limits about the recruitment limitation you are going to drive the population to extinction. This is true for and population, not just marine systems.

If churches are "responsible" because of charity work, is beer "nutritious" because the commercial was funny?
Q. What about rappers? are they "wholesome" because they got shot 5 times? Churches do charity stuff because it buys them street cred. Can someone summarize this in simpler English?
Q. Evolutionary biologists can reveal the genetic structure of populations and species by statistical analysis of genetic markers. These methods have many applications. They enable researchers, for instance, to distinguish among stocks of fish species that migrate from different spawning grounds. Such distinctions have important management and political implications in cases such as the salmon industry, since both the political units that include spawning locations and those where the fish are harvested have an economic interest in the stocks. In forestry, nurseries where commercial stocks of conifers are developed and grown are subject to genetic contamination by airborne pollen from wild trees. Methods developed by population geneticists… [cont.]

A. Basically, scientists (the evolutionary biologists) can look at the genetic makeup of something, and tell things like what species they are related to, and how they differ from similar species. Scientists can also genetically engineer organisms to contain the best traits and genes of their parents.
