Fish farming is the principal form of aquaculture, while other methods may fall under mariculture. Fish farming involves raising fish commercially in tanks or enclosures, usually for food. A facility that releases juvenile fish into the wild for recreational fishing or to supplement a species' natural numbers is generally referred to as a fish hatchery. The most common fish species raised by fish farms are salmon, carp, tilapia, European seabass, catfish and cod.

Increasing demands on wild fisheries by commercial fishing has caused widespread overfishing. Fish farming offers an alternative solution to the increasing market demand for fish and fish protein.

Major categories of fish farms

There are two kinds of aquaculture: extensive aquaculture based on local photosynthetical production and intensive aquaculture, in which the fish are fed with external food supply. The management of these two kinds of aquaculture systems are completely different.

How do you know if fish in a restaraunt is farm raised or wild?
Q. also how often can u eat farm raised fish and fish in general to stay healthy
Asked by whatuknowaboutthat3 - Thu Apr 3 17:14:58 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The farm raised fish will have on a straw hat, checkered shirt and overalls. The wild fish will be wearing a leather jacket, t-shirt and blue jeans and may have tatoos or piercings! Seriously the only way to know is to ask and hope they tell the truth.

Is there a test I could buy for a small lake to see if it is safe to swim or eat the fish due to farm runoff?
Q. I have a lake that is located next to a large corn/soybean field. It is sometimes clear, sometimes brown and murky. I am looking for a test kit to sample the water to see if it is ok for me to eat the fish or swim in this lake.

A. The chances are that the only problem is that there is no buffer around the lake and soil washes into it after each rainfall. The most likely problems are high nitrogen and phosphorus from the fertilizer. You could buy simple kits to test for these. Hach and La Motte make good ones. However, would you know how to interpret the results? You could contact either the county agent or the state fish commission about your concerns. In the meantime, I wouldn't worry about it. Even if the nutrients are high, only the bottom feeders and top predators are likely to be affected. Sunfish, perch, and the like should be OK, if you cook them properly.
