Fishing is the activity of catching fish. Fish are normally caught in the wild. Techniques for catching fish include hand gathering, spearing, netting, angling and trapping.

The term fishing may be applied to catching other aquatic animals such as shellfish, cephalopods, crustaceans, and echinoderms. The term is not usually applied to catching aquatic mammals, such as whales, where the term whaling is more appropriate, or to farmed fish. In addition to providing food, modern fishing is also a recreational sport.

According to FAO statistics, the total number of fishermen and fish farmers is estimated to be 38 million. Fisheries provide direct and indirect employment to an estimated 200 million people. In 2005, the worldwide per capita consumption of fish captured from wild fisheries was 14.4 kilograms, with an additional 7.4 kilograms harvested from fish farms.

How do you find out a species of fish when going fishing?
Q. I go fishing a lot and I catch lots of fish. How to i know the type of fish i catch?
Asked by fish.kills - Wed Jun 24 11:42:51 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you're in the United States, you can consult your state's fish and game proclamation. The proclamation is a collection of the rules, regulations, and other information for fishing in your state's fisheries. The proclamation should have descriptions of all the fish you are likely to catch in your state. It will also discuss limits, sizes, and other stuff like which fish are native to your area and which are nonnative or pest species. It will include descriptions of fish that are endangered or threatened. A good proclamation will have color illustrations or photos of the fish, at least for species that are difficult to distinguish. You may catch fish that you can't identify, even with the help of a fishing proclamation -- ask people who… [cont.]

How do you choose a good fishing pole?
Q. My husband recently bought my son his first fishing rod, and planned on teaching him to fish. But before he got the chance, we had to move and the movers lost my husband's rod! I'd like to buy him a new one for his birthday, but I hate fishing and know nothing about it. Any suggestions on which ones are good? Btw, I don't know specifically what he fishes for, but we're in tennessee and he wants to go try out a nearby lake - if that tells you anything.

What kind of different types of fishing are there?
Q. My uncle and i went fishing and he used this rod but it did'nt have a reel. instead, it was held parallel to the water and a floating stick was at the end of the line. when a fish bit, the stick would sink or rise and he would pull the rod up with fish. i was wondering what this kind of fishing is called.

A. Yes it sounds like cane fishing...but...we would need a better description of the "pole". There is a facet of fishing called match fishing, basically competative fishing where anglers have a relativly small area to fish, next to other anglers and the most pounds of fish wins. They have come up with some very inventive techniques to maximize reach and fish very pinpoint specific spots in their range (and often with a very thin float). One popular method (in Europe) is a stiff graphite telescoping "pole" (pole as opposed to rod). These are not your typical cane poles. These things can reach over 30 feet! you feed extra sections of pole into the previous and build the length of pole you need as you go! Plus these things can cost a mint,… [cont.]
