What kind of saltwater fish for a first timer?
Q. I am a fish hobbyist. I have 10 tanks in a building behind my house. However, I am just getting in the saltwater fish area. I have a tank getting set up right now. It is 30 gallons. I want it to have snails, fish, and all kinds of small creatures. What would be the best for a beginner?

A. Gobys, Damsels (but some can get slightly aggressive), Yellow Tangs stay a little smaller, I really liked my Flame Hawk fish and how he perched on the coral and watched everything. There are some angel fish that stay smaller, a Wrasse (the ones that stay small) looks like a bid flying when it swims, i had a green wrasse. A mandarin goby has really nice colors. Live rock will usually provide you with some odd little critters in your tank as well. Those are just a few i could remember having off the top of my head.

Whats the difference between Saltwater Flakes and Marine Flakes?
Q. I have a Clownfish and I bought Saltwater flakes. Will he eat that?

A. Saltwater and marine flakes are the same, and your clownfish will most likely eat both of them.

How do I lower or maintain my saltwater aquariums nitrate level to 0?
Q. I have a 20 gal saltwater aquarium. Amonia 0, Nitrite 0, but Nitrate seems to be always pegged between 40-80 even if I make 25%/partial water change. I have a clam, cleaner shrimp and several types of corals which seem to like the condition. The fish though does not last long. How do I solve this?

A. Sounds like you need to make your partial water changes more often. If you increase these changes and it still doesn't go down, and you are using tap water, than you should test the tap water for nitrates. If you have them in your water you need to start using bottled or R/O. They do sell filter media's which help absorb nitrates, though I would try to fix it at the source first. Also, keep the number of fish to a minimum since this is a very small tank - just a couple.
